The Long Afternoon is reconvening tonight to begin rehearsing four new songs for the upcoming An Index of Maladjustments album, and here are the demos we’re working from. As always, we welcome your comments on these tracks, whatever you think of them.
We’ve shared three of these before, so we’ll start with the one nobody’s heard yet, the oh-stop-whining-about-it-won’t-you anthem with the working title “So Sad.” If you want to play spot-the-influences, you can find damage inflicted by Belle & Sebastian and the Beatles’ “Help” on this, though I don’t think it sounds particularly like B&S or “Help.”
After spending the last several weeks in the Problematic Audio studio doing guitar tracks and vocal takes over the rhythm tracks we did at Frigo Recording last month, it will be a pleasure to do the full band thing. I’m also very excited to begin taking these four new songs from the demo stage to the full-band phase.
So, to recap, here’s what we’re working on tonight:
And below are the lyrics for “So Sad,” if you care:
I’m so fucking sad (x2)
Jill had a goal and she pursued it doggedly She set her sights high but she gave it out for free And in the end her best intentions led her Back where she began
And you can hear her singing: I’m so fucking sad I’m so fucking sad Don’t try to tell me it’s not that bad I’m so fucking sad
Stu had some scores to settle from back in high school He spent his days inventing new ways to be cruel He thought his day would come and when it didn’t His frustrations grew
And he tells all the drunkards: I’m so fucking sad I’m so fucking sad Don’t try to tell me it’s not that bad I’m so fucking sad
It doesn’t matter if the bigger things go right Because the little things still bring you to your knees You won’t go hungry and you may not sleep alone But you will be consumed by minor tragedies I’m so fucking sad
After her master’s Jen went for her Ph.D. Then she lost interest and she had a year at sea Now she’s a service rep for one of those Big retail companies
And she told her advisers And she tells all her friends And she tells everybody
I’m so fucking sad I’m so fucking sad Don’t try to tell me it’s not that bad I’m so fucking sad
So fucking sad
